So you’ve got yourself a little bitty dog, and you want them to be with you 24/7. I suppose very few of us have that opportunity, but I’m sure we’d all like to have our dogs with us at all times. Small dog carriers are a great way to carry your little fur baby around while your out and about. My fiance uses hers as a purse and a tiny dog carrier that she places over her shoulder. This helps free up her hands whenever she’s out shopping or running errands. The carriers for small dogs also work great for smuggling your dog into movies or a restaurant, granted your little dog isn’t a little yapper! Many dog carriers and purses today are quite fashionable and look like ordinary women’s purses. Fortunately for us, little Munchkin never barks, otherwise our cover would be blown. There have been a few times where a waitress will see her little head pop out, but they usually gush so much over her cuteness that rather than kicking us out they call over their co-workers to see Munchkin. Now I know you aren’t suppose to take dogs into restaurants and certain stores, but I really don’t see the harm in a little dog tucked away in their own small dog carrier or small dog purse.

Now their are all sorts of carriers for small dogs available these days. Choosing one depends on the size of your dog, your need to look cute while carrying the purse/carrier, where you’re going, and how much you want to spend.

Let’s look at the first criteria. The size of your dog. Since I’m mostly targeting small dog carriers, I’ll focus on dogs from the 1 pound range up to 12 pounds. For extremely small dogs or “teacups” weighing up to five pounds, the choices are pretty limitless. Most of the small dog purses in this size range can usually go over your shoulder like a normal purse. These are great for freeing up your hands. Here is an examples:

The carrier pictured above aren’t meant to be placed over your shoulder (obviously), rather they are meant to be carried with your hand. However, they work great if you have a larger dog in the 8-12 lb range.

Next, you need to decide on how flashy and fashionable you want to look while carrying your dog. Small dog carriers and small dog purses these days are meant to be a cute accessory to your wardrobe. Some are trendy and flashy, while others are more subtle yet still cute. So if you are a true fashionista, choosing the right carrier or purse is a huge decision. It must match your personality, wardrobe and attitude. However, if you are more low key, then choosing a carrier for small dogs that doesn’t scream out loud will be a better decision.

Next, depending on your destination, you may want to consider a little dog carrier as opposed to a tiny dog purse. Some airlines are strict about what they allow underneath their seats. These are great for safely keeping your dog in sight while on a flight. Just think about how horrible it must be if you had to stow your puppy in the luggage cabin below!

Lastly, cost is a very important factor to consider when purchasing a small dog carrier or small dog purse. Or, if you’re Bill Gates, you can ignore this section. Anyhow, carriers and purses come in a wide array of prices. For a high end purses for small dogs, you can look to pay around $350 up to $2000. Although the prices seem high, you pretty much get what you paid for– a very trendy and fashionable purse made with the best materials and constructed with the highest quality.
