San Luis Obispo Weekend Trip

August 29th, 2007 · No Comments

So Teresa and I took a little trip up to San Luis Obispo this past weekend. For those of you unfamiliar with this small town, it’s located on the central coast of California along the 101 freeway. About an 1.5 hours north of Santa Barbara. I went to college here (Cal Poly) and Teresa’s parents live in a close by city. We brought along Muffin and Munchkin for the trip. I made sure we they had a nice snug designer dog bed in the backseat so their ride up would be comfortable and so they could travel in style! Luckily, the bed worked out great. The two of them snuggled in together and slept for most of the way up to San Luis Obispo.

We arrived at about 2 am on Friday morning, so we both crashed to bed as soon as we got in. The next day, we headed to Pismo Beach for some awesome fish and chips. We left Muffin with the folks, but brought Munchkin along in her cute small dog carrier by Juicy. We felt really bad leaving Muffin at home, and she definitely let us know with her loud wimpering and barking. But we knew Teresa’s parents would take good care of her.

The weather in Pismo Beach was quite cold on Friday, so we put dressed Munchkin in some warmer clothes. Luckily we brought a cute small dog sweater for her, along with a bunch of other small dog clothes back at home. The fish and chips were great as usual, but we wanted to get some world famous clam chowder at Splash Cafe. Unfortunately, the fish and chips did us in. After lunch, we walked around Pismo with Munchkin on a leash. I think we got stopped about every 2 minutes from people in awe with her size. Luckily, Munchkin loves the attention, and loves to be pet.

Later on that night, we stayed in a watched a DVD, “Perfume”. Supposedly a great thriller movie—but I never made it past 20 minutes as I fell asleep on the couch with Muffin on my stomach.

The next day, we decided to be fair to both dogs, so we took both Muffin and Munchkin to dowtown San Luis. Strangely, the weather was about 10 degrees warmer. Muffin had her small dog harness on, while Munchkin sported some of her trendier pieces of designer small dog clothes. Again, we were stopped by many people to the amazement of Munchkin. I swear if I had a dollar for everytime we have been stopped, I would be a millionaire! We don’t mind stopping, unless we’re in a hurry. Some people ask to hold Munchkin, but we have to politely say NO for her safety. One incident where a woman had dropped Munchkin made that decision for us a while ago.

All in all, Saturday was a beautiful day, and Muffin and Munchkin got to see a town they had never been before. I’m sure they had tons of fun exploring the new area.

One concern of ours during the trip was Munchkin’s lack of appetite. Muffin did fine, since she’s the biggest pig when it comes to food. However, Munchkin was being a very picky eater. She usually eats a lot at home, but she would not eat at Teresa’s parent’s house. I would pour her food, but she would just walk away, Next, I placed her and the food in the bathroom, and closed the door. She just wimpered and cried until I opened the door. So finally, I sat in the bathroom with her, and she finally ate her food. I suppose the new environment might have put a little stress on her, curbing her appetite. With her size, we need to monitor her eating very closely to avoid possible hypoglycemia. Luckily, we found the trick to get her to eat.

So overall, we had a great trip. Beside Munchkin’s giving us a little concern with her eating, we all had a great time and a chance to show off Munchkin’s collection of designer small dog clothes!
