Since I am quite familiar with the Yorkie breed, I decided to write a little post of Yorkie dog clothes. Now in general, most Yorkies are around 4 -7 pounds. Of course, you’ll have your small Yorkies and your larger ones, but I’d have to say that the majority of Yorkies fall within this weight class. Furthermore, not all Yorkies are shaped the same. Some have longer backs than others, while some have a more cobby body taking on more of a square shape. I think every Yorkies needs their collection of Yorkie dog clothes. Our little Munchkin probably has more clothes than Teresa and I combined. Everything from little teacup dog dresses to little tiny dog sweaters. Keep in mind she only weight a little under 2 lbs, so most of her clothes are “teacup” dog clothing.

Now there are quite a few different types of dog clothes. You have small dog sweaters, small dog dresses, small dog shirts, and small dog harnesses. The harnesses I’m referring to are more stylish and resemble clothing as opposed to the nylon straps that many people are used to. Remember people–STYLE is the key. We need to keep our little babies looking cute and trendy! Moving on, depending on where you live will probably influence the majority of your Yorkie dog clothes. For example, living in Minnesota would probably require a larger collection of small dog sweaters. Someone living in Arizona would probably have a larger selection of small dog shirts. That doesn’t go to show that these ares only require one type of clothing. I’m sure both these areas have their cold and hot days. Even living in San Diego, where the weather is supposed to be perfect, Munchkin still needs her little dog sweater during the Winter months.

Since we are approaching the Fall season, and temperatures should start to drop, I’ll begin my Yorkie dog clothes selection with sweaters. A sweater should be able to cover at least 3/4 of your Yorkie’s body. A sweater should keep your dog warm, so covering the body is important. My Yorkie has maintains a puppy cut, so this makes it even more pertinent. One of our best selling dog sweaters is listed here. To find the correct size, measure your dog from the base of their neck to the base of their tail. This will give you the back length, which you can then coordinate to the sizing chart provided.

Next, we’ll take a look at small dog dresses. This is another essential for your babies collection of Yorkie dog clothes. Dresses are great for formal events or more dressy occasions. You typically want a dress to fit similar to a small dog sweater. I personally like my dress to cover the entire back, as opposed to the 3/4 I recommended for the sweater. However, this is completely your preference. With small dog dresses, you can either go with a more casual look, or a more sophisticated and dressy look. This “Crazy Daisies Small Dog Dress” is an example of a more casual look. Nothing to fancy, but still very cute. Something your Yorkie can wear to the mall or the beach. For a more formal look, I would recommend this Pink Sequins Designer Dog Dress. Again, check the sizing chart to make sure these dresses will fit your Yorkie. When in doubt, call up and ask the vendor if a certain piece of clothing will fit your dog.

Shirts are another must for any Yorkie wardrobe. Your yorkie dog clothes collection will not be complete without small dog shirts. These are great for just making your little furbaby look cute and trendy all day long. The selection for small dog shirts is endless. Most shirts have cute or smart allec sayings or silk screened graphics. Some also come with crystals, beads, and endless other accessories. In my opinion, shirts should cover about 1/2 the back to 3/4. I’m personally not a fan of shirts covering the entire back. Just not my style I suppose. I personally love this new Camo Skull Small Dog Shirt. Its super cute and trendy, and makes for a “bad to bone” look. It makes my little Munchkin look like a raging pitbull. Ok, not quite, but she does seem to have a little more attitude once this top goes on.

Lastly, harnesses have come a long way since the old plain jane nylon straps. Small dog harnesses are now a staple in the yorkie dog clothes world. Now you can kill two birds with one stone when you use these new small dog harnesses such as this Pink Flower Rhinestone harness. With such a harness, you can walk your Yorkie and keep them looking fashionable all day long. These small dog harnesses are meant to fit a little smaller on the back than the other pieces of yorkie dog clothes mentioned above. I’d say covering about 1/2 the back or less is a good rule of thumb. Just make sure your Yorkie is comfortable with the sizing.

So there it is, a brief overview of the types of Yorkie dog clothes available and their proper fittings. But keep in mind that this DOES NOT only apply to Yorkies. Other small dog breeds alike should follow these guidelines when selecting small dog clothes. Happy Shopping!
