How to Groom a Yorkie or Maltese: Drying and Trimming

December 12th, 2007 · No Comments

Its been a while since I’ve written about this continued topic, but you can check out the rest of this long series in the “Grooming Tips” category. In this section,I’m going to talk about drying and trimming your Yorkie or Maltese. In the last post about this topic, we discussed bathing.

After bathing your dog you’ll want to wrap your Yorkie or Maltese up in a towel. You don’t want to rub their coat with the towel as discussed in the bathing section.  Simply wrap your dog around the towel for a couple minutes and the towel should absorb a lot of the water.  Next grab your brush and begin to comb through your dog’s coat starting at the ends, and not the base of the coat where the skin is.  You’ll want to work your way from the end of the hair to the base.  Repeat this for every section of the coat.

Next comes the trimming.  You’ll want to trim the anal area and the feet.  For the anal area, grab a pair of scissors.  I don’t recommend using a trimmer unless you are familiar with using one.  I recommend cutting about a 1/2 inch area around the anal area.  Now, let’s start trimming the foot.  First, brush the hair on your dog’s legs and feet downward so that all the excess hair on their feet is laying on the table.  Next, simply trim around the outline of your dog’s foot to give it a nice rounded look.

After all is said and done, grab your blow dryer to finish off the complete drying.

Last in our series will be the finishing touches that you can do for grooming your Yorkie or Malese.
